Honoring K9 Duke: A Legacy of Loyalty Lives On at Ellis

The Ellis community in Tracy recently gathered for a heartfelt celebration honoring the life and service of K9 officer Duke. Now proudly named Duke’s Dog Park, the space stands as a tribute to the loyal companion who served alongside Deputy Michael Stewart of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

Duke’s story touched the hearts of many. A dedicated member of the K9 unit, he courageously gave his life in the line of duty in February 2023. The ceremony marked not just the naming of the park, but the continuation of his legacy—one built on loyalty, courage and connection.

Under the park’s new archway, a ribbon-cutting signaled the start of this new chapter. Members of the Sheriff’s K9 unit joined the community, each bringing their partner dogs to honor Duke’s service. “Our K9 handlers are no different than you guys at home,” Sheriff Patrick Withrow shared. “We love our partners. They’re part of our family.”

Spanning 2.5 acres, Duke’s Dog Park features two dedicated play areas—one for large dogs and another for small pups—along with shaded seating and drinking fountains for all. A cast-iron plaque with Duke’s likeness now stands as a permanent reminder of his service and sacrifice.

As the event unfolded, laughter and barking filled the air. Dogs dashed across the grass, explored the obstacle equipment and made fast friends, while their owners chatted beneath the shade. What began as a memorial quickly became a celebration—a moment that captured exactly what makes Ellis at Tracy special.

“People will come here with their dogs for exercise,” said Sam Serpa of The Surland Companies, the community’s developer. “Through that simple routine, friendships will form between neighbors—and the dogs will make a few of their own. This space becomes more than a park—it becomes a hub for community building.”

Following the ceremony, attendees took home frisbees, tennis balls and doggie bags, symbolic of the joy Duke brought to every day.

Today, Duke’s Dog Park stands as one of several thoughtfully designed parks at Ellis—a place where the bond between people and pets continues to inspire connection, loyalty and heart.
